It all started in Ms. Boire's period H study hall. It was sophomore year and Ian and Brett sat next to each other in class. They would talk basketball any chance they could. At that time the only other fun basketball league was Biddy, but it was for mainly Bedford kids. Brett and Ian decided that they would make their own "Biddy." Names for the league ranged from: MBA (which they chose), Middy and Manchbball. They decided all the rules, where they would play, and who would play in the league. It only started with a few friends, but grew larger and larger as word got around about the berth of a new league.
They started the spring of 2002 with 4 teams- Kings, Lakers, Raptors, and the Celtics. With 5 people to a team. The league started out rough, players were new to the rules, referees had a tough time taking charge and the league didn't know what to expect. At the end of the season the championship included the Raptors and Kings. The championship was called a tie after the first 2 games went 1-1, the captains agreed the referees weren't being fair. That was year 1.
In the offseason the league formed a committee to oversee the league instead of sole power going to the Commissioners. They decided to go out and add some new talent that would liven up the league. The 2003 season was dominated by two players and their teams respectively. Brett Beaurivage- Warriors and Nick Carter ( no not the backstreet boy)- Pacers. The season saw the three-point record broken, most points in a game broken, an undefeated season, and some great new talent. The playoffs proved even more exciting, as the number 4 seeded Sonics knocked off the previously undefeated Warriors and the Pacers won their matchup. The championship showed to be one for the ages where the Sonics took the Pacers to 5 games but lost in the 5th. That was year 2.
Year 3 is going to be the last for the MBA the originators are seniors and will be leaving after this year. The league has decided to go back to it's original form where there's no one or two superstars. The anticipation for the upcoming MBA season is mounting as the captains gear up to hear their draft picks in November. The rivalries are still their, the tradition is still there we'll see what's in store for the MBA's 3rd season.
